Roof Decking
Let's take a look at Picture 2. Your roofing system starts a configuration of wood trusses. These triangular shaped compilation of varying lengths of wood are what allows your roof to take shape.
On top of the trusses comes your deck as can be seen in picture 1. Your deck is the nailing base for the roofing material and must be sound. If the decking is rotted, the nails won't hold and roofing will be missing at the first windstorm. The same holds true for your fascia and trim boards, which are the boards you seen on the edge of your roof. This section is also called the eave, as see in Picture 1.

Steep Slope Roofs
A wide variety of roof types can be installed on top of the roof decking. However, on roofs with a slope greater than 2/12 (as in the roof rises 2" for every 12" in length), you will most commonly find shingle, tile, and metal roofs. Other more uncommon roof types include shake and slate roofs.
